Piprahwa

Piprahwa village is situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India, 71km from Lumbini and 104 km from Gorakhpur. Archaeological excavations suggest that it may have been the burial place of one portion of the Buddha's ashes which was divided into 8 portions and one was given to his own Shakya clan.

A large stupa containing bones and relics of the Buddha was discovered at the site by William Claxton Peppe (Read more), a British colonial engineer in 1898. Besides the stupa, several monastery ruins and a local museum is located at the site.

Based on archaeological findings, some scholars suggest that modern-day Piprahwa was the site of the ancient city of Kapilavastu, the capital of the Shakya kingdom, where the Buddha spent the first 29 years of his life, while others believe that the original site of Kapilavastu is at Tilaurakot in Nepal.
